The author, Ferdinand David, had been a pupil of Spohr, was a central figure at the Leipzig Conservatory (he taught both Joachim and Wilhelmj) and was leader of the Gewandhaus orchestra under Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn and David frequently performed sonata recitals together and Mendelssohn consulted David when writing his famous Violin Concerto in E minor. David gave the first performance of this concerto in 1845. David was also known for his many editions of solo and chamber music and was the first to publish a playing edition of J. S. Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin.
