This classic Neopolitan song was written in 1880 to commemorate the opening of the funicular, cliff railway, on Mount Versuvius. (The railway was later destroyed by a volcanic erruption in 1944.)
The song has been made popular more recently by Luciano Pavarotti and The Three Tenors, Andrea Bocelli and on the violin by Andre Rieu.
